VROD

12-22-2021 TSS Visual Report of the Day.

"Comet Leonard... and even more comet Leonard"

The biggest astronomical show in some time is now unveiling itself in the evening skies, that would be comet Leonard. As it approaches the sun it gets brighter as material is being blown away from the nucleus by the solar wind, resulting in vaporized gases and water ice being blown out to the coma and trailing the nucleus in an increasingly long tail. Follow along as OzEclipse (Joe) describes his views over three nights with a pair of 9x63 binoculars. He then documents what he observed by taking photos, all from the dark skies of Central West NSW. With perihelion approaching, it is definitely time to view this showpiece before it starts moving back towards the outer solar system. Congrats Joe on winning the VROD for today, though as John Baars said in his nomination it could be an APOD as well!
