10-28-2022 TSS Visual Report of the Day.

"Observing Report for 23 October 2022 - a chilly autumn galaxy hunt"

Plumbing the depths of Andromeda and Triangulum for galaxies for sport describes the outing that KT4HX (Alan) had on the night of October 23rd. Getting out with his 17.5" Dob from his dark sky location enabled him to observe a tremendous quantity of galaxies including one (NGC 404) that is famous for being in the proximity of a bright yellowish star.

With averted vision and some patience, as well as using the trick of putting the star at the edge of the field of view it can be discerned as a fuzzy oval patch. At magnitude 10.3 it is relatively luminous and its surface brightness allows it to be detected in less than optimal conditions. (For example, I've observed it several times from the backyard in my 10" Dob). Alan's adventure continues from Andromeda into Triangulum with superb descriptions of what he saw. Congratulations Alan on winning the VROD for the day!
